If scsi:

The very latest version of Sane, which only runs on glibc
systems, is very much improved.
It autodetects your scanner type, and according to what I've
seen in the newsgroups, will attempt to choose a working
driver based on the manufacturer of the scanner internals.
So if your scanner's internals were made by a supported
manufacturer, sane will detect it and try to substitute the
correct driver. I guess it is only true for scsi though.
