[SuSE Linux] IBM ThinkPad 760EL

Can someone point me in the right direction on setting up an IBM ThinkPad 760EL w/ 5.2 & KDE?

On this box, NT gets a nice 800x600x256 mode but I can't even get good fonts with Linux.  I have been to the laptop support web, but found it a bit confusing with all the other notebook specs in there.  I thought I might try a note here before I rolled up my sleeves and dove into that again!
