Sorry to hear that.
Things to check before you start over (if you are up to it)
First check /etc/nsswitch.conf to ensure you have enabled dns lookup for the
services you want (in this case host and network).
Second ensure /etc/resolv.conf has the domain search name correct and the
entries "namesever xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" for each nameserver you want.
