Zero hasn't been a number as long as one, it was thought to be a 
special case. Another thing to remember is that AD or Anno Domini means 
in the year of our lord and zero isn't really appropriate as as soon as 
Jesus was born it became the first year (even if the date is wrong the 
principle is correct).
