Macintosh files have resource forks which don't send well over the
internet.  Files from Macs usually need to be compressed into one
continous file before being sent.  Binhexing is one way that this is done.
I haven't decoded any mac files in linux but it looks like the utilities
megatron or unhex should convert the files for you.
