Wav files sound like crap playing them that way. Try playing au files
that way and it'll sound much better. If you want to test waves use
something that supports that format better like esd etc. Try
playing sound through
sound apps, like playmidi, timidity, mpg123 etc, and if you still get the
white noise then be concerned.:-) That cat /dev/audio works best with .au
files.
