Well, I'm a little late getting into this thread but will add my 2 cents
worth...

1. I've been using coax cable for years for small networks. If you only have a
couple of hosts you can use coax and avoid the purchase of a hub. On the
otherhand if a cable is damaged it is harder to find the problem since all
hosts are connected in a series. For a few hosts this isn't a problem (ie. I
have three systems connected at home).

2. Twisted pair can handle 100bT but I believe coax is limited to 10bT. I
currently have an old 486 host that can only run at 10bT so coax is fine for
me.

3. It is not necessary to turn off encrypted passwords to get samba to work.
The better way is to tell samba to use encrypted passwords in the smb.conf
file. Obviously, this won't work if you have mixed Win98 and Win95 hosts.
