Go back to www.kernel.org and read carefully.  Kernel versions with an odd second 
number are *developmental* kernels.  They have drivers and features that the normal 
ones don't have, but unless you are developing for it or need one of those drivers, it 
is suggested that you use a stable kernel.

Recompiling the kernel sounds more scary than it is.  I've done it so many times that 
I can do it in my sleep and I've only had it fail on two occasions 1) my L2 cache on 
the motherboard was bad and 2) I was adjusting the Sound Blaster parameters to get the 
right IRQ and DMA values.  Just follow the steps and soon, you'll be doing it just for 
fun :-)
