I found that it was the X server binary from SuSE that was crashing
when executing some programs. I replaced it for the binary from the
XF86Free ftp site. Can you try this and see if it solves your problem?
For example if you use the SuSE 5.3 S3 X server, replace it with:
ftp://ftp.rge.com/pub/X/XFree86/3.3.3.1/binaries/Linux-ix86-libc5/Servers/XS3.tgz
