In researching this via man pages, serial howtos, dejanews, various
texts, etc., the (uucp) cu program seems ideally suited for my needs.
It deals with the lock file, modem configuration, system-specific
phone numbers and chat scripts, and I'd be nuts to try to reinvent
any of that, including the lock file protocol.
The SuSE 5.3 manual has good info on UUCP, as does O'Reilly's
Network Adminstrator's Guide.
