I haven't tried either of these programs. I've been using xwd to get
screen dumps, and have had no difficulties. The image generated by xwd
can be converted by gimp to jpg, gif or some other more common format.
Run:

xwd -out myScreenCapture.xwd

The cursor will change to a cross-hairs pattern. Click inside the window
you want to capture, or on the desktop, outside of any window if you want
the whole screen.
