This sounds indeed like a hard disk problem. Try to pass the following
parameter to the linux kernel on boot-time: ide0=noautotune
You may also try to set you HDD BIOS settings to more conservative values
(no UDMA, no PIO Mode 4). Also check your HDD cables, maybe they are too
long or the connection is bad.
