Hello all,

My char-major-4 problem, I found, could be fixed in two ways:

1) Compile serial as a module

2) alias char-major-4 off in conf.modules.

My ttyp5 problem went away mysteriously. I _SUSPECT_ it has to do with
xconsole, and lsof wouldn't work for me because I'm running kernel
2.2.1. Thanks to all who helped.
