hello david,
which version of SuSE do you have? and do you know which kernel you
have installed? ironically, i found it easier getting sound to work
with kernels 2.0.x than with 2.2.x. Anyway, if you have the 5 CD
release you should find the free version of OSS under the sound packages
via YaST. Make sure it is installed and then read the help that comes
with it. It will hopefully automatically detect your sound card and
install the appropriate drivers. Or if you've got the $20(?) just buy
the commmercial version of OSS and get technical support (and more
functionality). Using OSS is very easy so you should have few problems.
