Well an internal also produces more heat inside the case.
It takes up a slot, which reduces airflow.
It consumes power from the pc power supply, which can
be significant in a system packed with hardrives and ram.
It may be a small factor, but any phone line surge is brought into
your pc case with an internal, a factor in you surviving a lightening
strike.
