I believe it originated with "teletype", which were the old terminals
back in "the olden times".
A teletype was a typewriter with a keyboard, an was the input-output
device back then. You were lucky to get 2400 baudrate with them.
The name just has carried on.
Now there is also ttyS* which stands for serial input output.
