Hi,
    this problem has been solved by someone of the list (TJo, for sake of
precision) three or four days ago, and I had it, too, so no better occasion
to show I've learned the lesson ;) !
    In the file /etc/ppp/options , at the line 72, there should be the word
'lock'. Just comment it, by putting a # simbol before it, and it all will
work.
    BTW, someone would explain why this setting is the default, even if it
creates so many troubles? If it wasn't for you, I never would have solved
this problem...
