I've had this problem recently, I think it was caused by an error on compiling
the kernel. When I do mine I run a batch programme (make dep clean bzImage
modules modules_install bzlilo) I must have missed an error which caused the
problem, and as the programme just carries on reguardless, it didn't know there
was a problem until I restarted. Try recompiling the kernel, and watch for
errors, failing that try reinstalling the source.

Hope this helps

Matt

PS Did you copy the new system.map into the root directory?
