If you are using the 2.036 kernel, you're probably on /dev/lp1.
Make sure you don't have a conflict with your sound card and your bios
has irq7 assigned to the printer port. Sound should be on irq5
in your case.
Does it work as root, but not as a user?
Do you have the lpd daemon started in yast?
Can you "cat textfile > /dev/lp1 " ?
If not check irqs.
If you can, then make sure the lpd daemon is started.
If root can use the printer, but users can't; then you
must add the users to the lp group.
