I usually shutdown with the following command, which works (e.g., does not
crash but correctly halts the CPU and system after shutdown):

    shutdown -h now

As you correctly note, this does *not* poweroff the system (for which you
need to use the -p switch, as I recall).  Unfortunately, any attempt at
autopoweroff produces the system crash you noted in your earlier post.
