Actually Dee, I think they need to get a bit snazzier as well. I mean they have a
chameleon as a mascot and it comes in one color GREEN. Go figure? This may sound
like a
trivial jab, but I believe it hits at a core lack of excitement is SuSE's marketing
image. I saw a good book today in the bookstore that went through the functions and
features of Star Office, the KDE, and many more Linux goodies. This book had a dist of
another Linux on the included CD. Yes, the SuSE book is likely the best technical
resource available with a Linux dist. The book I am taking about was full of
airbrushed
color pictures. It's glitzy. It will sell.
I like SuSE and I have the feeling that the folks on this list are above average in
their
focus and knowledge in comparison to other dist's mailing lists. I want to see SuSE
grow. I don't want one distribution to become the Microsoft of Linux.
I am beginning to formulate some ideas of how SuSE could make fundamental changes in
thins like YAST and really improve the value of this already find product. I was
thinking today that the folks at SuSE should step back and really challenge their
paradigm. Not because it is bad, but because I believe it could be much better.
I want to make it clear that I am not dissing SuSE. I find it much easier to work on
my
SuSE box than I do on my Solaris box. Things just tend to fall into place better. I
am
a few versions of Solaris behind, so that might not be a fair comparison.
Nonetheless, I
have accomplished an incredible amount on this box that I don't believe I would have
done
as easily on either NT (too "black box") or on Solaris (too arcane). I hope this is
taken in the sense of constructive criticism that I intend.
