There is setup instructions for ESS soundcards in
/usr/src/linux/documentation/sound

Most common problems seem to be irq conflicts
with the printer port, not having the
right entries in /etc/conf.modules
to initialize the sound module, and not
issuing the right modprobe commands.

When you boot, does the system give you a log entry
saying the card was "initialized" ? Or just "identified".?

If it was initialized, then you have a conf.modules
problem. If it wasn't initialized, you have
an irq conflict or your isapnp.conf has an error.
