I have installed SuSE 5.3 on a Gigabyte board but that was with a PII.
Having tried Linux on various other chip/board combo's without problem think
it's probably unlikely that that is the problem.
When do you get the boot failed message?, immediately after it succesfully
boots from the CD. If so maybe try the floppy disk boot first.
