I hope I'm not muddying the waters here, but I remember reading
something about Compaq computers being peculiar in that the BIOS
stores some configuration information on the hard drive's 1st
cylinder which can cause problems (I probably don't have the
details exactly correct...) I would suggest starting at the

There are several links to Compaq Presario pages; although I
didn't see the 1805, another model may be similar enough.
I doubt that this problem is SuSE specific.
