What does you ppp-options file contain? I'm always running the latest
kernel (which is 2.2.5 at the moment) and I never had any problems.
But from what I've seen from other people. One of the most common
reasons for pppd failing are unnecessary (that is, sometimes bad) pppd
options.
Even if you haven't changed them, we should have a look at them.
