The machine is connection something outside, since some *process* 
wants/needs to go outside.

reasons: (speaking about my ISDN experiences with dial on demand, hoping
          that diald acts similar in network senses)

- Nameserver requests, due to Interfaces, IP-addresses not "mentioned"
  in /etc/hosts. With ISDN, I can switch to a log-mode, that logs
  addresses and ports, helpful to find the culprit

- Processes like sendmail (another one that wants to resolve interface
addresses
  with names). Remove the -q30 that sends mail all 30 mins. There are
the 
  two variables in rc.config, that need to be set / changed:
  SENDMAIL_EXPENSIVE="yes"
  SENDMAIL_NOCANONIFY="yes"

- Netscape open? It autofetches mail every 10 mins by default

For a *very* rough guess: look into the SDB for ISDN and reasons for
unwanted connections. This might give a few further hints.
