I suppose, this is due to some securety settings in yast. there is no
root login via network. (standard) you can "loosen" security with some
variables in yast.
This restrictions may apply to rlogin or rather r-services as well.

make sure to run /sbin/SuSEconfig after changing these vars

could be:
#
# If you want to allow root logins from other machines, set
ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE
# to "yes".
#
ROOT_LOGIN_REMOTE="no"
