Have you tried calling mpg123 with -2 or -4 (and possibly -m)?
I use mpg123 on my SparcStation LX, which is a little old<g> and
normally play mp3's by using mpg123 -2m <mp3title> this plays
the mp3 at a lesser quality (22MHz instead of 44MHz) but it means
I get no slowdown or skipping, which happens if I try to play mp3s
normally. (the m is for mono instead of stereo, which helps as I use
the built-in speaker<g>)

Hope this helps,
Jim.
Have Fun,
Jim.
