I would and could, but really others could do better than could I.  For
instance, the Linux Kernel HOW-TO got me through my first try when I was
cutting my teeth on Linux.  I'm sure you'll find it helpful as well. 
Also, see the README file in the kernel archive.  I'd suggest printing
it and keeping it handy.  Here is the HOW-TO:
