No, this is unexpected. It should work from text mode, too. If it does not
really hang, but just leaves the backlight off (check with capslock key),
then i guess that you need some additional options to s2ram as described on 
http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram, maybe "-a 3" or "-p -m" will help.

Yes, wmpowersave is mostly unmaintained and might be broken by the latest
powersaved changes. File a bug in the novell bugzilla and Holger might
actually fix it :-)
