Sorry. I think I was confused about this issue. I thought vbetool was an
independent program that was called by s2ram when available and when
you specified its corresponding program options. As I didn't have it
installed, I thought it was not being used.

Well, I tried several things from X. Sorry about not trying from the
text console, but this is a time consuming task when things don't work.
However, don't hesitate to ask me to try it if you are interested in me
trying. I'll do it.

The following table contains the results of calling s2ram in several
different ways, with variable results:

Call                    Works?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
s2ram -f No (Caps lock led blinks by itself on resume)
s2ram -f -a 1 No (Black screen on resume, no response)
s2ram -f -a 2           No (Same result)
s2ram -f -a 3           No (Same result)
s2ram -f -p -m          YES
s2ram -f -p -s          YES
s2ram -f -m No (Caps lock led blinks by itself on resume)
s2ram -f -s             No (*)
s2ram -f -p             Partly (**)
s2ram -f -a 1 -m        Did not try
s2ram -f -a 1 -s        Did not try

(*) Screen is corrupted after resume, eventhough system responds to
keyboard input. In X, black and white 1-pixel width columns are
displayed. In VTs, a corrupted screen with badly drawed characters.

(**) Weird screen problem after resume, like when you watch an
interlaced movie without applying the interlace filter. It's fixed
if you change to an VT and back to X.

Finally, I'll paste the output of s2ram -n again, just in case:

Machine matched entry 122:
    sys_vendor   = 'Acer, inc.'
    sys_product  = 'Aspire 3000*'
    sys_version  = ''
    bios_version = ''
Fixes: 0x2c  VBE_SAVE VBE_POST
Machine is in the whitelist but perhaps using vbetool unnecessarily.
Please try to find minimal options.

This machine can be identified by:
    sys_vendor   = "Acer, inc."
    sys_product  = "Aspire 3000     "
    sys_version  = "Not Applicable"
    bios_version = "3A18"
See http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram for details.

Greetings.
