I just tried from console, both vga=792 and normal. It works.
However I have two issuses (also under X):

1) acpi seems broken after a s2ram, as a 'shutdown -h now' doesn't power off
the machine. A BSOD is needed, although everything else seems ok

2) there's some SATA dmesgs, but I guess I can live with them (the abnormal
statuses are also seen at boot time (no cables attached to ports ata2-4)
