My new episode of Walk in the Park TV, "Kaaterskill," is now showing on Ithaca's public access cable channel 13 and online at http://ithacafingerlakes.com/2013/05/31/ .
We travel to New York's Catskill Mountains: to Kaaterskill Falls, said to be the state's tallest, to Kaaterskill Clove, to the site of the of the old Catskill Mountain House, and to Olana, the home of Frederic Church, one of the most famous of the Hudson River School painters. I discuss the geologic origins of the Catskills and relate them to the rocks and waterfalls of the Finger Lakes region. And, using artwork, I relate the story of Rip Van Winkle, whom Washington Irving imagined in the Kaaterskill area. Finally, we look at a few wildflowers that have been blooming lately in our Finger Lakes gorges.
