IMHO: canola oil is no more genetically modified than sweet corn or navel oranges. It's a hybrid, but it was done the old fashioned way, it wasn't done by mixing DNA directly. However, refining oils always leaves process remnants in the oil, and as far as I can tell it's not good to put any oil, unrefined or not, through high heat, even the ones that tolerate it more. Low heat is okay.
