FutureWatch: From the Piston to the Wankel to the Quasiturbine Posted on Friday, October 20 @ 12:04:47 CDT Experts in Canada have come up with a different kind of engine called the Quasiturbine. It is as revolutionary a paradigm as the Wankel engine and the piston engine, and appears to overcome the limitations of both. The engine will run on any fuel, from petroleum to gas to steam, and can be kick started from anything including compressed air. It requires no oil or lubrication, and will operate just as well submerged or in hostile environments. It requires no timing mechanism and always operates at 100% efficiency. The Quasiturbine is a concept which improves the conventional engines in 2 ways : in reducing the dead time, and in making better time management in the engine strokes. With the Quasiturbine, dead time is reduced to an effective zero. Gas turbines have a compression turbine and a power turbine; the Quasiturbine results from a research aiming at unifying those two turbines into one entity (blades of which work alternatively as a compression turbine and a power turbine). Traditonal rotary engines use the principle of volume variation between a curve and a moving cord. This new engine concept makes use of a "four degrees of freedom X, Y, q, ¿" rotor, trapped inside an internal housing contour, and does not require a central shaft or support. This concept is the result of extensive research for an hybrid turbine-piston engine with a fixed centre of gravity during rotation (zero vibration). Concerning environmental issues and energy efficiency, the engine claims to produces less NOX than a conventunal piston engine and also meets the hydrogen engine criteria. The engine also boasts other environmental criteria: * Fuel consumption - using a new thermodynamic cycle with a shorter and asymetric pressure pulse, this engine is more fuel efficient. * Air pollution - having a reduced combustion confinement time, substantially less NOx is generated in the Quasiturbine. * Thermal pollution - having an early mechanical extraction capability, less thermal energy is throughout in the environment. * Noise pollution - having 4 combustions per rotation, and due to a longer gas expansion chamber, noise is reduced by a factor 20 or more * Vibration pollution - vibrations are responsible for billions of $ of breakdown damages everywhere. Dr. Raynaud vibration syndrome is affecting thousands wood workers and truck drivers. The quasiturbine is a vibration free engine. * Oil free engine - lubrication is source of pollution. The Quasiturbine has potential to be an oil free engine. * Photo detonation compatible - unlike the piston engine, chemists like the photocombustion because it is faster and more complete. Short pressure pulse and fast pressure rising time characteristics make the Quasiturbine ideal for photodetonation mode. * Steam and pneumatic power source - where pollution free engine is suitable, Quasiturbine is a perfect and efficient gas expansion engine. Quasiturbine is also suitable for co-generation projects. * Power generation - the Quasiturbine engine is ideal for solar thermal station using close liquid-vapor circuit. * Hydrogen compatible - hydrogen fragilises steel, and degrades all oils. The Quasiturbine has a cool and stratified intake area most suitable for pure hydrogen engine (lubricant free) combustion.
