UK: January 22, 2001 LONDON - British special polymers group Victrex Plc on Monday said it had agreed a product development deal with Ballard Power Systems, Canada-based global market leader in the fast developing fuel cells industry. Victrex said it and Ballard would develop and manufacture two separate ionomers (polymers that conduct protons) for use in the membranes of Ballard fuel cells. The initial development period will last up to four years, during which time each party will fund its own costs. Victrex said costs in the first year would not exceed 500,000 pounds ($730,000). Ballard is a business with a market value of more than Can $10 billion though it has yet to reach the commercialisation stage. The group is focussed on proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology, by which hydrogen is combined with oxygen without combustion to produce electricity with zero greehouse gas emissions, and has signed partnership deals with world leaders in the automotive and static power sectors. Victrex was a management buyout from former chemicals giant Imperial Chemical Industries Plc floated on the London Stock market in 1996. Its best know product is PEEK, a high performance plastic used for aerospace, medical implants and other applications. The group has a current market value of around 261 million pounds ($381 million).
