Prime spot for a biodiesel demo: New York, May 2 -- Consolidated Edison plans to restart a small Brooklyn power generator that was the most polluting power plant in New York City. State regulators have tentatively agreed to let operations resume without an environmental review. The plant is a part of the Hudson Avenue Generating Station near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It was built in 1951 and burns oil, a much dirtier fuel than the natural gas used by newer plants.
Con Ed Vice President Peter Lanahan says the plant is needed to provide enough power to the city. But environmentalists say the 60 megawatt plant would produce a small fraction of the city's peak daily power need of more than ten thousand megawatts.
