in the 70`s when the last oil problems were going on, the profits were up
1000% at the time they were required to report this. i wonder if they are
now. greg

Subject: [biofuel] $5.00 a gallon.......

>List-Has anyone considered that all the major oil companies are having,
>right at this moment, RECORD PROFITS ??? At the consumer's expense, of
>course. Does anyone know what happened to the millions of barrels of oil
>that former president Clinton released from the Strategic Oil Reserve,
>done to lower prices??
>Because there was no stipulation in the agreement, the major oil
>companies exported the oil to Europe, and other places where they could
>sell it for maximum PROFIT, the motivation behind any major corporation.
>It was not kept here, to help lower heating oil prices, as was intended,
>instead, it was used to further increase the profit margins of the
>blood-sucking oil corporations. Now, President Bush, is an oilman, and
>is in the pocket of the oil companies. Anyone that reads the news knows
>this. He also seems not to believe in protecting the environment. This
>is the way of big business, folks. Raising the price of automotive fuel
>to $5.00/gallon will basically have one effect-it will put millions of
>people that are barely making it, right over the edge. These days,
>earning $8.35/per hour-40 hours/week, puts a family of four only a few
>dollars above the poverty line. In the town I live in, there is little
>employment, and the same can be said for most of the rural communities in
>this area. If you want to work, you must drive 15-20, or more, miles in
>some direction. There isn't even a grocery store here, and hasn't been
>for the last 8 years, as the owners were unable to compete with big-city
>pricing. So, a car is not a luxury here-it is a necessity, if you want
>to eat, or work. As a matter of fact, the elderly woman I bought this
>house from, sold, because she was widowed, and unable to drive. She had
>to depend on neighbors to drive her, for every necessity. There is no
>public transportation, of any kind, available in a 15 mile radius here.
>So, that isn't the answer. Of course, if we raise the price of fuel to
>$5.00/gal, then we would have the money to SUBSIDIZE public transport, as
>is being done in almost every major city right now. Then, of course, we
>come to this point-what are people going to do until every little town
>has some sort of public transport? We'll be back at square one. The
>fact is, public transport cannot support itself in a major city. It
>certainly can't support itself in a rural area, where ridership is less,
>and mileage (at $5.00/gallon) is more.
