Paul Newman Says No to Arctic Drilling
Some Senators call it "energy security." Paul Newman and Environmental Defense call it "short-sighted opportunism," as a group of Senators are seeking to attach seriously flawed energy provisions, including oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, as an amendment to nearly every bill due for a vote before the year is up. Actor and philanthropist Paul Newman has added his voice to the chorus of protests against the large vested interests in Washington trying to make a case for more oil drilling. Says Newman, "Many of our elected leaders have said our country must be less reliant on the flow of oil from unstable areas, and we agree. That's just common sense." But Newman strongly disagrees that the only alternative is to drill for oil in the nation's wilderness areas. "This would do nothing to decrease our nation's dependence on oil," states Newman. The Facts Are In: Recycling Works Are you an avid recycler? Do you ever wonder if your conscientious efforts to bundle newspapers and catalogs and look for post-consumer content on paperboard boxes is really worthwhile, in the bigger picture? Well, guess what--recycling does have real environmental and economic benefits. According to "Greener Cartons," a new report from the Alliance for Environmental Innovation (a project of Environmental Defense), paperboard (packaging used for everything from cereal to software) with post-consumer content uses less wood, energy and water to produce, thus helping to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, to mention a few of the environmental pluses. And using paperboard is cost-effective for companies; a recent Alliance project with UPS clearly demonstrated the savings possible. <http://news.environmentaldefense.org/cgi-bin5/flo?y=nEvf0D4A1l0BnU0BA1r0AD> Find out more about the benefits of recycling and what you can do. Tailpipe Tally: How much does your car pollute? Our easy-to-use search tool Tailpipe Tally allows you to compare the environmental and economic costs of different vehicles. Simply select basic information like model year (1978 to 2001) and make, and you will see the average amount of fuel the car consumes in a year, the cost, and its average annual emissions. When you see how much fuel efficient cars (like the gasoline-electric, hybrid Toyota Prius driven by our own Executive Director Fred Krupp) slash carbon dioxide emissions, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide, you will want to make your voice heard by U.S. car companies via the Clean Car Pledge.
