Because there is obviously a vast difference in how people both walk
and bicycle. I ride a lot, and at least 90% of the time at a fairly good
pace with elevated heart rate, breathing, etc. OTOH, when I walk I never
experience that sort of "pump", (snip)

I don't experience that sort of "pump" either when bicycling along side a
walker
except maybe hill climbing OTOH I may push my bicycle up YMMV

I also observe many people however who ride much more leisurely,
often coasting whenever possible, while I usually pump just as fast
downhill (unless it's very steep, which it isn't around here). (snip)

Add me to the list of similar cycling behavior until fatigue has its way
then leisurely physical activity enters into my hike and bike scenario
but I like the outdoors and hope to enjoy it while a steward of mother nature.
Besides it offers a chance to smell the roses and chit chat with folks headed
in the same direction.
