Ken, I have never experienced an explosion related to battery recharging. I don't know what type of dry cell you're referring to, but I suppose under the right circumstances a gas could be given off that either ignites or bursts because of pressure buildup inside the dry cell case. I purchased my recharger precisely because it was advertised as compatible with "nonrechargable" type dry cells. Before purchasing I read everything on the website and after receiving the unit I read all the literature accompanying the unit. There was no mention anywhere of a danger of explosion. The only warning was that some "nonrechargable" dry cells were indeed nonrecharging, and also one couldn't predict accurately how many recharges one would get. But the claim that most dry cells of this type would in fact recharge well in the neighborhood of 4 to 10 times or more has been supported by my own experience.
My father and uncle used to resuscitate defunct rechargable batteries -- I guess they must have been NiCads -- by zapping them with the hefty charge stored up in a large capacitor. They explained something about whiskers or crystals forming inside the battery that would prevent it from taking a charge, and zapping them would sometimes break up whatever it was that was interfering with the charge process. I don't know about dry cells exploding but I remember being knocked on my backside by a zap from one of those capacitors. You only do *that* once! -- Christopher Witmer Tokyo Ken wrote: > There is a warning on the label saying dry cell could leak or explode when > recharged. Did this ever happen to you.
