Few Major U.S. Media Outlets Pick up U.K. Report of U.S. Plans to Spy
on U.N. Members

By The New Mexican 03/02/2003

In a story not yet picked up by the Associated Press, CNN, The New
York Times and many other major U.S.-based news outlets, the U.K.
newspaper The Observer published a leaked secret memo written by an
official of the National Security Agency, instructing staff to tap
the business and home phones and e-mail of key swing vote delegates
to the U.N. Security Council.

Here's the link to the full story on The Observer site.

Revealed: US dirty tricks to win vote on Iraq war

As of Monday afternoon, several U.S. media outlets had reported the
story, along with many others around the world, while others had not.

The Drudge Report covered the story, but called it false on the basis
of Anglicisms in the Web text of the memo. However, a usually
reliable source with friends in the U.K. reported that the print
edition published a photocopy of the memo with "American English,"
suggesting that the Web edition relied on a telephoned transcript,
taken down in proper "English" English.

Here are lists of English-language media that have and haven't
reported the story.

These media are among the ones that did report the story of the memo
(sources: direct visits to sites and a Google News search of 4,500
