There are usually equivalent (free) programs to replace those ones. (most distributions come with a lot of programs you will need.) There are ways to run M$ compatible software if there is something that cannot be replaced (eg Wine project, Win4Lin, etc.) Wine works with many programs, but does require fine tuning to get things working sometimes. There are some really good programs in the Linux suite now: Open Office now will reliably edit & resave .xls & .doc files & be M$ office compatible; Gnucash is a great accounting program for home/small business, there are heaps of Audio, video, & graphics programs, many of which are now also ported to Windows. Linux does take some retraining, but there are local users groups out there that will help, & many help sites on the web. I would suggest trying Knoppix first, as it boots from a CD, & saves a small config file on your windows partition if you want to use it again. It is possible to dual partition your drive, & use Windows when necessary. I used thia approach for the first 8 months, until I realised I never started windows any more, so now only have a Linux partition. I personnally like Mandrake, but RedHat is also good. Suse is a very good distribution also, with a commercial windows emulator in the Commercial release (ie paid for). I email work home from my office (.doc & .xls files mainly), work on them at night, then resend them back to work to open with the dreaded M$ packages. I have found no problems now for the types of file I work on. So people, give it a go! It IS worth the effort. regards Doug (a Linux user for 3 years now) ------------------------ Yahoo!
