Why would we expect most people to change their vehicle? People
drive the vehicle that fits their usage needs and price point.
People who drive tiny cars probably wouldn't switch to 4 door
extended cab 3/4 ton pickups if gas suddenly became $0.25 per
gallon. Very high prices might make people watch the amount of
driving they do, but I doubt most would change vehicles.

My personal experience (limited) with "fuel efficient vehicles", as
well as the commonly held ideas of that vehicle class, show them to
be vehicles that are not enjoyable to drive and do not meet the
interior space requirements of most drivers. This image may be far
from the truth, but it is the view that most people have of that
vehicle class. I don't think that this situation will change until
people have a more positive view of fuel efficient vehicles. U.S.
adults today associate that car class with things like 1984 Escort
station wagons with an automatic transmission that were so
underpowered that the "high output" version of the tiny 4 cylinder
motor was required if you ordered A/C on the car!
