I looked at importing a vehicle from Europe to the US about two years
ago, but decided that it was too much trouble. First you must locate a
vehicle, then you must transport it here, next you must get it
federalized (that is bring it up to US DoT standards, and then you have
to register it.

Federalizing usually costs anywhere from $5k to $15k depending on the
make and model and includes such additions as O2 sensors, seat belt
buzzers, safety glass, gauges in English measurements (ie MPH vs. KPH),
tires, and lights. Additionally, if the vehicle wasn't sold here, it's
next to impossible to get one in because you would have to submit one
for a crash test. Understandably, most of the "grey market" vehicles
imported into the US are luxury or performance models already sold here,
so price isn't usually an option (after all, what's another ten grand on
top of $200K for a Ferrari, Lamborghini, or Bentley?).

There are exceptions however. If you import a vehicle that is at least
25 years old, it only has to comply with the DoT standard in place at
the time of manufacture. So, while you still have to federalize, it is
considerably easier (cheaper) to comply with 1979 laws than 2004.

If you're still interested, here's a link to a FAQ on a Gwagen website
where this topic comes up a weekly basis.

Good luck.

Subject: [biofuel] importing a diesel car

Has anyone ever imported a (used) diesel car into the USA? What are the
costs involved, and are the engines/exhaust systems different enough in
different countries to mess up emissions testing in the USA?

Eva
