Hi all,

Well one of the silent ones here who has never posted until now.

I have been producing bio-diesel for a few months now without any
trouble until this morning.

My previous testing included nine one litre batches and six five litre
batches without a problem. Nice clean fuel was the result after the
bubble wash which burned very nicely in the tractor during hay season
and in my gas loader as a gas additive.

One of my biggest problems was that I was using 7 g of lye in 200 ml of
methanol to 800 ml of fryer oil... this had worked every time until
now.

I heat the oil to 130 ' F and mix the lye / methanol blend ... and stir
with a paint mixer and drill for 15 minutes.

Last night a made four batches of five litres from the same oil and put
them into the same settling tank... this morning I had a solid jelly
mass that resembles tomato jelly... no layers ... just an even jelly
mass.

The only difference this time was the use of a different brand of
methanol. I also had opened a new container of lye which was a little
caked. Possibly to much water?

I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before?

I will trying a one litre batch with the same oil and lye, but with the
original methanol brand I was using.

---

I just came back from an oil pickup... had a call while writing this
message for a pickup. I live in cottage country in Ontario, Canada
which has dozens of "chip trucks". These fish and chip truck produce up
to 120 litres of fryer oil every week or two. Lots of fryer oil in my
area.

Well I just checked the jelly mass which is in a drum outside and it is
now a liquid mass that seems to be clearing... the sun is beating on it
and has warmed it up enough to liquefy...

I'm assuming the reaction has not completely taken place... the oil was
veg. shortening..

OK, how long should I be keeping my mixture at 130' F, during the mixing
and how long after?

Thanks,

Saul A. Juliao
