AIST, private firms to test DME trucks in Japan

Japan's National Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (AIST) and eight private companies (CO-OP EV, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Itochu, Itochu Enex, JFE Holdings, Fukuyama Transporting, Ono Sokki, Iwatani International) intend to start a public road test of mid- and large-size trucks fueled by dimethyl ether (DME).

DME is a gaseous alternative diesel fuel, handled as liquefied gas similar to LPG. It is manufactured from synthesis gas in a process similar to the production of methanol. DME production provides a competitive method of natural gas utilization to the gas-to-liquid (GTL) technologies. DME is compatible with compression ignition, but a dedicated DME fuel system is required.
