The Balfour Decision Reconsidered

The Cults of the Jealous God

By J.A. MILLER

Mr. Miller's conclusion about divorcing religion and politics is quaint. It
may even be worthy of discussion as an independent topic. However, his basic
premise is erroneous. The Balfour Declaration was a gift to Chaim Weizman.
The facts are as follows: Weizman was a chemist at Manchester University in
England in the opening years of the 20th century. . Today, he would be
identified as a biochemist. He studied Clostridium acetobulilium, an organism
that
fermented various substrates into acetone and butanol. Along came WWI.
Britain was at war with Germany. Until the war, Britain's supplies of acetone
were
imported from Germany. Acetone was vital to the manufacture of munitions.
With the war, Britain's supplies were cut off. Weizman notified the British
government that he could manufacture acetone from corn. He demonstrated the
process and was authorized to set up manufacturing plants. He did so and
produced
the acetone necessary to make munitions. After the armistice, the British
singled out Weizman to express the nation's gratitude, for it was due to him
that the war could be won. He was offered anything and everything. Weizman,
an
ardent Zionist, said simply, "Give my people a homeland." THAT is what led
to the Balfour Declaration and the eventual establishment of the State of
Israel.
