New Mazda Technology Reduces Diesel Emissions

Date : 20030603

Japan's Mazda Motor Corporation has developed a clean diesel engine
that significantly reduces the amount of particulate matter (PM) and
nitrogen oxides (NOx) in exhaust gas emissions. The automaker began
monitored test drives on public roads in preparation for commercial
production.

The newly developed engine is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder inline,
common-rail direct injection turbo diesel. The new diesel monitor
model "Bongo" van powered by the new diesel engine is equipped with
an all-new diesel particulate filter (DPF). The advanced engine
control systems reduce PM emissions more than 75 percent and NOx
emissions by more than 25 percent, compared to diesel engines used in
the current Bongo model.

With the new breakthrough, Mazda is aiming to meet standards
stipulated in new, stricter emissions regulations for diesel engines
such as the Automobile NOx/PM Law and the Tokyo metropolitan
government's diesel vehicle regulations.
