Hi Keith, I'm not sure but I had that first experience too. I just posted my results a few minutes ago.
If you look at the picture at the JTF "Make your own biodiesel contd" page (biodiesel_make2.html) you will notice a thin layer seemingly on the top portion. I noticed that too when I made my test batch yesterday.
